In addition to behavioral health services, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, accessible pharmacies, housing and supportive social services. Through the Altshuler Center for Education & Research  we are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County.


    The Licensed Vocational Nurse, is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of consumers for a designated time frame and provides care to those consumers via the therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the therapeutic environment, treatment and modalities and interdisciplinary collaboration. Nursing and paraprofessional staff report to the shift Charge LVN.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)

    • Administers and documents medications per physician order.
    • Advocate and coordinate care for needed medical, dental, and prevention services when appropriate.
    • Assist the staff in monitoring by reporting potential problems.
    • Assists and follows medical records procedures for DDRTC requirements.
    • Assists with scheduling of psychiatric and lab services.
    • Attend staff meetings as required where program development and resident’s treatment issues are addressed.
    • Become familiar with CJAD, CSCD and Metrocare standard operating practices.
    • Communicate effectively with consumer to elicit essential information with accuracy and timeliness.
    • Contribute to team knowledge and understanding of each consumer.
    • Coordinate consumer care with vendor, pharmacy, and/or other healthcare providers as needed.
    • Coordinates needed supplies for team with Registered Nurse Manager, as necessary.
    • Document interaction and behaviors as needed using incident reports and other documentation.
    • Documents care provided accurately, appropriately, legibly and in a timely fashion.
    • Evaluate assigned shift to ensure proper coverage in compliance with safety and contract guidelines.
    • Gathers hospital discharge paperwork
    • Gathers Medical Records as needed
    • Identifies all consumers clearly before the administration of any medication, phlebotomy, and/or electrocardiograms.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all reports concerning staffing, consumers and center information per policy.
    • Meets designated benchmarks and/or quality measures
    • Monitors for side effects and symptoms by reporting changes in consumers.
    • Monitors and submits daily census, weekly reports and other reports as instructed.
    • Monitors productivity reports on a weekly or daily basis.
    • Participate in Quality Improvement activities, i.e., reviewing documentation, consumer care and departmental and Center policies.
    • Perform routine house keeping and administrative filing, copying and general office duties as needed on shift.
    • Perform Venipuncture ,EKG’s, and obtain vital signs per physician order
    • Performs routine medication and supply inventory as scheduled.
    • Place verbal/telephone orders on doctor's order sheet within 2 hours
    • Promote positive relations between the specific units and other departments, consumers, physicians and community agencies.
    • Provide directions and feedback to residents in a respectful and constructive manner.
    • Provide initial and ongoing training to new and existing staff members.
    • Provide patient teaching to individuals and to groups regarding mental health, medication, and other health-oriented or supportive topics.
    • Provide physician extender services, including, coordination of lab results, and obtaining authorizations for ordered medications.
    • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness, safety and set up of nursing stations and psychiatrists work areas.
    • Responsible for obtaining medications from pharmacies and transporting to center location.
    • Serve as charge LVN for shift worked. Provide supervision and medical support of nursing staff including: certified medication aide and certified medical assistants.
    • Transcribe and follow doctor’s orders with established unit policies and standards.
    • Understand and reinforce vendor’s community rules and guidelines, seeking supervision when appropriate.
    • Use work time productively to ensure shift coverage, lunches and breaks.
    • Work as a team to achieve daily program goals.





    Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing and licensed in the State of Texas with 0 to 1 year of experience. Strongly prefer Mental Health, Criminal Justice and Substance Abuse related experience.



    • Intermediate level on MS Excel, Outlook, Word processing programs and Internet use.

    • Phlebotomy Training
    • LVN licensure
    • CJAD Training and Certification (within first year of employment)
    • PREA Training and Certification (within first year of employment)
    • Valid Texas Drivers License
