The primary purpose of this position is to safely transport assigned consumers in Metrocare vehicles to and from day habilitation sites, places of employment, doctor’s appointment and other community places and to support consumers with daily living skills who live independently in the community.


Metrocare is the largest provider of mental health services in Dallas County, serving more than 52,000 adults and children annually. For more than fifty (50) years, Metrocare has provided an array of services available to people with mental and developmental disabilities. In addition to behavioral health services, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, accessible pharmacies, housing and supportive social services. Through the Altshuler Center for Education & Research and our software initiative, XenatiX, we are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other specific duties may be assigned.)

The essential functions listed here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the job.

  • Transport the individuals safely within the community to doctor’s appointments, day habilitation sites, jobs, shopping and other places as needed.
  • Assist individuals in their homes with activities of daily living, including: meal planning and preparation, housekeeping, budgeting, and shopping.
  • Assist with the administration of the consumer's medication or to perform a task delegated by a registered nurse.
  • Assist the register nurse in monitoring the consumers’ health by reporting potential problems.
  • Conduct habilitation activities that train the individual to: develop or improve skills that allow the individual to live more independently, develop socially valued behaviors, integrate into community activities, use natural supports and typical community services available to the public, and participate in leisure activities.
  • Assist with completing vehicle maintenance by ensuring that vehicles are taken in for service, oil changes, car washes, inspections, etc to ensure safe functioning of the vehicle.
  • Maintain all documentation as required for company and state compliance within 24 hours of providing the service.
  • Maintain acceptable work record by being punctual to work and requests PL within acceptable time frames established by supervisor to ensure adequate daily coverage.

  • Highly developed decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently as a team member in a work setting.
  • Passionate in training and advocating for persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English is required.



  • High School degree or GED required.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities preferred. 


  • Ability to work with reports and numbers.  


  • Ability to be flexible in response to the changing needs of the consumers.
  • Ability to train the consumers in community settings.
  • Able to intervene in consumer crisis interventions.
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards in all professional relationships within the organization and outside of it. 


  • Intermediate level on MS Word and Excel.
  • Email and word processing programs.
  • Ability to utilize Internet for resources 


  • Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.
  • Liability insurance required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Center’s liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record.
