Metrocare is the largest provider of mental health services in Dallas County, serving more than 52,000 adults and children annually. For more than fifty (50) years, Metrocare has provided an array of services available to people with mental and developmental disabilities. In addition to behavioral health services, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, accessible pharmacies, housing and supportive social services. Through the Altshuler Center for Education & Research and our software initiative, XenatiX, we are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County. 

 

The Veteran Navigator serves as department representative for veterans and stakeholder outreach coordination. This position liaises with federal, state and local government representatives, as well as veteran service organizations (VSO). The incumbent
will attend external events on behalf of the department and works, on a daily basis, to promote and further all facets of the department's outreach efforts. This includes communications and meetings with organizations, businesses, stakeholders, and
most importantly veterans. This position serves as a conduit to bring information from the department to veterans and veterans' representatives and to bring suggestions, questions and concerns back to the department from the veterans’ community. This position assists the Veteran Navigator Team Lead, and Veteran Program Manager, as well as other senior level management, in the analysis of existing department programs and policies and recommends changes to effect better service to the veteran population. The incumbent will also represents the department to both veteran and non-veteran organizations; promoting veterans and veterans’ benefits in order to maximize benefits delivery to veterans and their families.

Responsibilities

Developments and implement North Texas outreach initiative.
Recommends and conducts outreach efforts to increase access to mental health assistance for NorthTexas veterans.
Develops outreach efforts that will enhance awareness of resources available, and effectively communicate with all North Texas veterans.
Provides outreach to North Texas veterans by providing benefits, program and resources information to VSO’s, meetings, conferences, and other external events with stakeholders.
Develops materials and/or presentations to communicate veterans’ benefits, programs and resources to various audiences.
Represents Metrocare Veteran Services before public bodies to present information about availableresources.
Liaises with other Federal, State, Local, and Private veterans’ benefits, programs and resource providers.
Coordinates and work with all VSOs, County Veteran Services Officers, Non-Profit Organizations, and other interested stakeholders the department may partner with in its outreach efforts.
Provides liaison with the Federal VA Regional Office, medical centers, outpatient clinics, and veteran centers to enhance communication and awareness.
Oversees special projects.
Drafts, or assists, in the preparation of written reports.
Researches and recommends new and innovative ways to conduct outreach to veterans.

Works with the Metrocare Marketing Department to assure that the message is conveyed to the general public in a way that promotes and shares information and programs in an effective manner.
Provides direct, indirect and coordinated counseling and benefit application assistance for veterans and family members.
Receives and responds to inquiries made of the department by stakeholders on behalf of veteran constituents and their families.
Maintains communication with the Associate Director of Clinical Operations to ensure awareness of alli ssues that confront any team or program.
Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in human services with 1 to 3 years’ experience in MH/MR or related field or Master’s Degree with 0 to 2 years of experience in human services.
Knowledge of federal and state benefits available to veterans and their dependents. Service in the military preferred but not required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Basic math skills required.
Ability to work with reports and numbers.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
Ability to utilize Internet for resources.
Ability to successfully use an automated clinical record keeping system.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.
Liability insurance required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Center’s liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business. Must have an acceptable driving record
